Shawn Mendes Bio

Shawn Peter Raul Mendes is a Canadian pop singer-songwriter who was born on August 8, 1998.

As he uploaded song covers to the video-sharing website Vine in 2013, he started to amass a following. He attracted the notice of Island Records A&R Ziggy Chareton and artist manager Andrew Gertler the next year, which resulted in his securing a contract with the label.

2014 saw the publication of Mendes’ self-titled debut EP, and 2015 saw the release of his first studio album, Handwritten. Mendes is one of just five musicians to have their debut album at number one before turning 18 thanks to Handwritten, which debuted atop the US Billboard 200.

The song “Stitches” peaked at number one in the UK and in the US and Canada’s top 10 singles.

The son of Manuel Mendes, a Portuguese citizen, and English mother Karen, Shawn Peter Raul Mendes was born in Pickering, Ontario, on August 8, 1998.

His father is a Toronto-based businessman from the Algarve who distributes supplies for bars and restaurants, while his mother is a real estate agent. Aaliyah, his younger sister, is his name.

He was brought up in a religious family and participated in Pickering FC’s youth program.

Mendes played soccer and ice hockey, joined the high school glee club, and took acting classes before graduating from Pine Ridge Secondary School in June 2016. (leading as Prince Charming at one point). He also appeared in a Disney Channel Toronto casting call.

The singles “Treat You Better” and “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back” from Mendes’ second album Illuminate (2016) peaked at number one in the US and other countries, respectively.

The debut song, “In My Blood,” served as the album’s promotional platform.

Mendes became the third-youngest artist to have three number one albums as the album debuted at number one in the US. His 2019 singles “If I Can’t Have You” and “Seorita,” the latter of which peaked at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, were both hits.

He became the youngest male artist to ever debut at the top of the Billboard 200 with four studio albums with his fourth, Wonder (2020).

Mendes has garnered numerous honors, including 13 SOCAN awards, 10 MTV Europe Music Awards, 8 Juno Awards, 8 iHeartRadio MMVAs, 2 American Music Awards, three Grammy Award nominations, and 1 Brit Award nomination.

On their annual list, Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2018.

Is Shawn Mendes Gay?

Shawn Mendes claimed that he has suffered and found it “frustrating” to have to put up with the persistent speculations about his sexuality over the years.

Dax Shepard and Mendes chatted about Shepard’s “That was quite difficult for me because there were some individuals in my life who I was very, very close to who were homosexual and living in the closet, she admitted in the open interview on the “Armchair Expert” podcast. And I experienced genuine rage for those individuals.”

Mendes claimed that he finds it “tricky” and is unsure of how to handle situations where there are suspicions about his sexual orientation. Said Mendes: “You want to say, “Even if I’m not homosexual, it would be okay if I were. Also, although I’m not gay, there’s nothing wrong with being gay.”
