Jonnie Irwin Biography
Born and raised in the small village of Bitteswell, Leicestershire, Jonnie Irwin has gone on to become a well-known television presenter, writer, lecturer, business, and property expert. With a degree in estate management from Birmingham City University, Irwin worked for Christie & Co, becoming an associate director within three years, before moving on to Colliers International.
In 2004, Irwin was selected from hundreds of applicants to present Channel 4’s hit show A Place in the Sun – Home or Away, alongside co-presenter Jasmine Harman. The show has now filmed over 200 episodes all around Britain and is broadcasted globally, including in New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa. Irwin also presents episodes of BBC property shows Escape to the Country and To Buy or Not to Buy, as well as the spin-off Escape to the Perfect Town.
Irwin’s knowledge and expertise in the field have led him to advise clients on business and property, ranging from small high street gift shops to multimillion-pound corporate hotel packages. He still runs a property and business consultancy and writes a regular column for A Place in the Sun magazine. Irwin also regularly hosts seminars and corporate events.
Despite his busy schedule, Irwin is also a keen sportsman, having played rugby for Lutterworth RFC and Rugby Lions RFC until an accident in a sevens tournament left him with a broken back, leading to his retirement from the sport.
In 2011, Irwin launched his own show, Dream Lives for Sale, on Sky 1. The show saw him help people leave behind their lives in the UK and buy a business. Later that year, he began a new series, The Renovation Game, which aired on weekday mornings on Channel 4.
In 2016, Irwin married Jessica Holmes, and together they have three sons. The family moved to the Hertfordshire town of Berkhamsted in 2018 before relocating to the Newcastle upon Tyne area.
Jonnie Irwin Illness: What Disease Does Jonnie Irwin Have?
Irwin announced that he had been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in 2020, leaving his mood “really low.” In an interview with Hello!, Irwin said,
“I don’t know how long I have left, but I try to stay positive, and my attitude is that I’m living with cancer, not dying from it. I set little markers – things I want to be around for […] I’m doing everything I can to hold that day off for as long as possible. I owe that to Jess and our boys. Some people in my position have bucket lists, but I just want us to do as much as we can as a family.”
