Neuer was born on 27 March 1986 in Gelsenkirchen, West Germany. He started his professional career at Schalke 04, where he won the DFB-Pokal and DFL-Ligapokal. In 2011, he signed for Bayern Munich, and since then, he has won 28 trophies, including ten Bundesliga titles and two UEFA Champions League titles in 2013 and 2020, both as part of trebles. He has also won the UEFA Goalkeeper of the Year and the IFFHS World’s Best Goalkeeper five times each.
When Neuer signed for Bayern Munich, he faced hostility from the Bayern fans as some were unhappy about the club buying a Schalke goalkeeper. However, he quickly won over the fans with his exceptional performances, breaking records and leading the team to several victories.

In September 2020, Neuer saved a one-on-one chance from Sevilla’s Youssef En-Nesyri in the 87th minute in the 2020 UEFA Super Cup, which Bayern Munich won 2–1 after extra-time. Six days later, he won the German Super Cup. In October 2020, Neuer reached his 200th clean sheet with Bayern in 394 matches in a 4–0 win over Atlético Madrid in the 2020–21 UEFA Champions League. His record surpassed Sepp Maier, with only Oliver Kahn ahead of Neuer.
In August 2021, Neuer broke Oliver Kahn’s record of 204 clean sheets in 557 matches, achieving his 205th clean sheet in Bundesliga in 441 matches. He also celebrated his 300th Bundesliga victory in his 447th Bundesliga game on 23 October 2021, as Bayern won the Bundesliga during the 2021–22 season with three games to spare.
Despite his achievements, Neuer is known for his humility and his dedication to helping others. He is a Catholic and supports a Gelsenkirchen-based Catholic social action group that campaigns against child poverty and a Gelsenkirchen-based youth club run by the Amigonians. He also started the Manuel Neuer Kids Foundation, a charity foundation for children.
