Paul Vario was born on July 9, 1914, in New York City, United States of America and grew up in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn, in United States. He was of Italian descent, and his parents had immigrated to the United States.

His father, Salvatore, was involved in organized crime, and Paulie grew up around mobsters. He dropped out of school at a young age and became involved in criminal activities, including extortion, loan sharking, and gambling. Vario was associated with the Lucchese crime family, one of the Five Families of the American Mafia.

Paul Vario Crimes

The mobster became a made member of the Lucchese family in the 1950s and quickly rose through the ranks. He became a captain in the family and was responsible for the family’s activities in Brooklyn. He was known for his violent and ruthless tactics, which included beatings, torture, and murder. Vario was also involved in labor racketeering and controlled the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 807, which represented truck drivers in New York City.

One of his most notorious crimes was the Lufthansa heist in 1978. The heist, which was the largest cash robbery in American history at the time, involved stealing $5 million from a Lufthansa cargo terminal at JFK International Airport. Vario was believed to be one of the masterminds behind the heist, and several of his associates were involved in the crime. However, Vario was never charged for his role in the heist.

Paul Vario was arrested several times throughout his criminal career but was able to avoid conviction for many years due to his connections with law enforcement and the justice system. However, in 1984, Vario was convicted of extortion and sentenced to ten years in prison. He was released in 1991 and retired from organized crime.

Vario died on November 22, 1998, at the age of 84. Despite his violent and criminal past, Vario was a beloved figure in his community and was known for his generosity and philanthropy. He was also the inspiration for the character Paulie Cicero in the movie “Goodfellas.”
