Blackmore, who was raised on a dairy farm in Killenaule, County Tipperary, Ireland, as the daughter of a teacher and a farmer (Eimir and Charles), began riding horses at the age of two. She participated in pony club meetings, hunting, eventing, and pony racing as a child.

At the University of Limerick, she rode and competed as an amateur rider while earning a degree in equine science.

On February 10, 2011, Blackmore won her first race as a novice jockey when Stowaway Pearl, trained by Shark Hanlon, triumphed in the Tipperary Ladies’ Handicap Hurdle at Thurles.

After riding seven winners as an amateur rider and eleven point-to-point winners, she became a professional in March 2015. At Clonmel on September 3, 2015, Hanlon’s Most Honourable, who was trained by her, became her first professional victory.

She was the first female conditional riders’ champion in Ireland in 2017.

Blackmore rode in the Grand National for the first time in 2018. The Mickey Morris-trained horse she was riding, Alpha des Obeaux, started out at 33/1 but fell at the Chair fence on the fifteenth attempt.

She won the Chase Brothers Novices’ Handicap Chase in 2019 with A Plus Tard, becoming the first female winner of the Cheltenham Festival. After that, Minella Indo won the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle, giving her her first Grade 1 triumph.

Blackmore was now riding as a stable jockey for Henry de Bromhead, who trained both of the winners. Blackmore finished tenth in the 2019 Grand National aboard the Valseur Lido, a 66/1 outsider trained by de Bromhead.

Honeysuckle won the Mares Novice Hurdle Championship Final in April 2019 for Blackmore, who then won his first Grade 1 race in Ireland. Blackmore finished the season with 90 victories and was second to Paul Townend in the Irish jump racing Champion Jockey standings.

In the Close Brothers Mares’ Hurdle at the 2020 Cheltenham Festival, Honeysuckle gave Blackmore yet another victory. In the shortened 2019–20 season, Blackmore placed third in the Irish jump racing championship.

She rode Honeysuckle to victory in the Champion Hurdle in 2021, becoming the first female jockey to do so. She also became the first female jockey to win the Ruby Walsh Trophy for top Cheltenham jockey that year after finishing with six winners over the course of the four days.

Blackmore, the first female jockey to win the 2021 Grand National, rode Minella Times to victory on April 10. De Bromhead’s Minella Times started off as the fourth favorite at 11/1, but after giving Blackmore a “sensational spin,” she cleared the finish line 612 lengths ahead of her stablemate and rival Balko Des Flos.

No onlookers were there to see Blackmore’s historic victory because to COVID-19 regulations. After the race, when questioned by ITV, she stated: “Right now, I can’t tell if I’m male or female. I hardly feel human at all. It’s incredible “.

Blackmore became the first female jockey to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2022 by riding the favorite A Plus Tard to a 15-length victory at the Cheltenham Festival after securing a repeat success on Honeysuckle in the Champion Hurdle.

Blackmore has been dating jockey Brian Hayes since April 2021.
