Turkey sentences TV preacher, Adnan Oktar to 8,658 years

In a retrial on Wednesday, November 16, a court in Istanbul sentenced a well-known Muslim televangelist to 8,658 years in prison.

Adnan Oktar surrounded himself with women he called “kittens” who were barely dressed.

During his TV show, these women used to stand around him while he talked about creationism and conservative values. They wore a lot of makeup and not much else.

In 2021, the 66-year-old man was given a sentence of 1,075 years for crimes like sexual assault, sexual abuse of minors, fraud, and trying to spy for both the government and the military. But a higher court overturned that decision.

During the retrial, the Istanbul high criminal court sentenced Oktar to 8,658 years in prison on multiple charges, including sexual abuse and taking someone’s freedom.

The agency also said that 10 other suspects were each given prison terms of 8,658 years by the court.

Critics see Oktar as the leader of a cult. His shows on the online A9 TV channel made him famous, and Turkey’s religious leaders had often spoken out against him.

In 2018, he was arrested in Istanbul as part of a big crackdown on his group by the city’s police financial crimes unit.
